Summary

We found few hands-on tests of desk pads, and several of them date from 2021 to 2023. So this card says which outlet tested what, and when, and it names a pick only where two outlets separately tested the exact product we link. That leaves one overall pick, one pick for wireless charging, and no best-value or best-budget pick.

Best overall: Twelve South Sustainable Leather Desk Pad, the pad outlets call the Twelve South DeskPad. Popular Science names it best overall and reports using an optical Bluetooth mouse on it with no hitches, and The Gadgeteer's hands-on review calls it a very comfortable surface to work on. Popular Science's page was last updated in 2023, and The Gadgeteer's review is from 2023. [src1, src3]

Best with wireless charging: Journey ALTI Wireless Charging Desk Mat (Regular). 9to5Toys, iMore and Pickr each tested it, in 2022 and 2023. Pickr scores it 4.5 out of 5, and iMore's reviewer says it has earned a permanent place on their desk. Pickr also found that it can slip, and iMore that its leather side is not great for fast mouse sweeps. [src7, src8, src9]

No best-value or best-budget pick. BTOD's group test favours cheap PU leather pads: BTOD bought seven pads, reports that the PU ones won almost every test, and calls the K KNODEL Desk Mat its pick for the money. But BTOD's is the only test we count of the Knodel and of the Aothia Leather Desk Pad it tested beside it. The Review Rewind also reports comparative results for both pads, with no first-person result for either, so we do not count it as a second test. The YSAGI Dual-Sided Desk Pad, our previous budget pick, also falls short. The Review Rewind tested the size we link, but BTOD's article names no size and its link goes to a smaller 23.6" x 13.7" listing, and a different size is a different product. BTOD also recommends the Gallaway Leather Desk Mat for a classier look, while reporting that a pen went right through the paper and that it was the only mat still showing marks weeks later. That is one test, so it is an alternative too. [src2]

The Nordik Leather Desk Mat (Cork Pebble Black), our previous best-value pick, has left this card because we found no outlet reporting a hands-on test of it. MakeUseOf names it best overall and DeskRated a runner-up, but MakeUseOf does not say whether it tested anything, and DeskRated reports no hands-on results for individual mats. [src11, src12]

Best Overall: Twelve South Sustainable Leather Desk Pad, 29.4" x 15.8" — Check price

Popular Science names this its best overall desk pad and reports its own use: "We had no problem using an optical Bluetooth mouse on the DeskPad, with no hit to performance or hitches." It also dropped water on the pad and found that the materials impeded water from soaking in. The Gadgeteer's hands-on review, on a Dove Grey pad, says the texture makes mouse tracking more accurate and calls it "a very comfortable surface to work on when computing or writing/drawing". Its complaint is stiffness: the pad took several days to lie flat, and rolling it up again brings the curl back for days. Popular Science lists the thickness as 4.9mm and The Gadgeteer gives 2.75 mm. A senior deals editor at CNN Underscored also uses it and likes the leatherlike finish. Popular Science's page was last updated in September 2023 and The Gadgeteer's review is from August 2023. Popular Science lists one size, 29.37" x 15.75". When we checked on 2026-11-03, Twelve South's own US store sold the black version as a final-sale item, which that page says rules out returns and warranty replacement. [src1, src3, src10, src16]

Best with Wireless Charging: Journey ALTI Wireless Charging Desk Mat, Regular 26.8" x 14.6" — Check price

Three outlets tested this mat. 9to5Toys used it for a couple of weeks with an Apple Magic Mouse and an iPhone 14, reports it "easily tracking my Apple Magic Mouse", and says it will keep using it. iMore says it "earned itself a permanent place on my desk", but also that the leather side "isn't great for fast mouse sweeps" and that the felt side could get dirty. Pickr scores it 4.5 out of 5 and calls it highly recommended, while reporting that the mat can slip whichever side faces up. The mat is reversible, with a space between its layers for papers, and the charging panel attaches to either side. Journey lists 15W maximum for a phone and 5W for earbuds, while its comparison table labels this model's charging Standard and gives Fast 15W to its ULTRA, PLAY and LIFT models. 9to5Toys reported 7.5W for an iPhone within a 15W total. Pickr notes it comes with a USB-C cable and no charging block. These tests date from 2022 and 2023. Available from the maker when we checked on 2026-11-03. [src7, src8, src9, src17]

BTOD's Pick for the Money: K KNODEL Desk Mat, 31.5" x 15.7" — Check price

BTOD bought seven desk pads and calls the Knodel "my pick for the money". In its tests the Knodel stayed flat and smelled more neutral than the Towwi and the Ysagi, a coffee ring cleaned up easily, a mouse moved easily on it, and marks from a dropped heavy item disappeared within minutes. You can write on it, though BTOD warns that pressing hard pushes the pen through the paper. BTOD's is the only hands-on test of it we count, so it is an alternative rather than a named pick. The Review Rewind says the Knodel performs identically to the YSAGi in waterproof and mouse tracking tests and lays flat immediately, but it gives no first-person result for the Knodel. BTOD's article names no size or colour; its link goes to this 31.5" x 15.7" Lake Blue listing. [src2, src6]

Cheap PU Alternative: Aothia Leather Desk Pad, 31.5" x 15.7" — Check price

BTOD tested the Aothia in the same group as the Knodel and reports identical results for the Aothia, Knodel and Ysagi on writing, spills, mouse movement and dropped items. It stayed flat and, like the Knodel, smelled more neutral. Separately, a CNN Underscored editor used an Aothia pad for two years and says it "did a great job of protecting the surface", but that is an editor's account in a roundup and names no size. The Review Rewind says the Aothia laid flat within a day, but it gives no first-person result for the Aothia. So we count BTOD's as the only test. Previous Budget Pick: YSAGI Dual-Sided Desk Pad, 31.5" x 15.7" — Check price

Popular Science and MakeUseOf both label the YSAGi their best budget pad, but neither describes a hands-on test of it. The Review Rewind tested this 31.5" x 15.7" size: water and canola oil wiped off, a mouse tracked "with no skipping or lag", and the pad stayed put when a MacBook Air moved across it. It scores the pad 4.2 out of 5. BTOD reports two flaws from its own test: "The Ysagi had small bumps within the mat that didn't go away", and the worst smell of the group, although its FAQ later says the Ysagi lay flat out of the box. The Review Rewind's comparison says the same about the bumps and the smell, with no first-person result for either. BTOD's article names no size and its link goes to a 23.6" x 13.7" listing, so we count one test of the size we link. Each side is a different colour. A Classier Look: Gallaway Leather Desk Mat, Large 36" x 17" — Check price

BTOD bought this mat as one of its seven pads, calls it "a great option as well", and says it feels softer than the others. It adds: "I would recommend this product to anyone looking to add more of a classier look to their desk setup." It also reports two flaws: "my pen went right through the paper", and a dropped utility knife left marks, which makes it "the only mat that actually left marks weeks later". BTOD gives no separate result for it on spills or mouse movement. Its name says leather, but the listing's title says PU leather, and BTOD writes it up under its PU pads heading, apart from the Knodel, Aothia and Ysagi, whose results it calls identical. BTOD's FAQ says 36" x 17" is the size it received and the next step up on a wider desk, and its link goes to this Large black listing. BTOD's is the only hands-on test of it we found, so it is an alternative rather than a named pick. [src2]

Paper and Cable Storage: Orbitkey Desk Mat, Large 35.2" x 16.6" — Check price

The Gadgeteer's hands-on review, from 2021, lists the Medium and Large and praises the large variant, but does not say which sample it used. It reports "smooth mouse movement and easy cleanup", a very solid magnetic grip on the cable holder, and "a handy document hideaway". The Modest Man tried the slim and medium sizes, not this Large: it says the mat works well with a mouse and the magnet is very strong, and that the medium was too wide for that reviewer's desk. Popular Science's section on it is headed best for productivity and says it delivers "much more functionality than most similarly simple desk pads", without describing a test. A product designer and a chiropractor both recommend it to CNN Underscored. That leaves at most one hands-on test of the Large we link, so it is an alternative. [src1, src4, src5, src10]

Looks First: Grovemade Matte Desk Pad (6 sizes) — Check price

Popular Science labels it best looking and says of Grovemade's claim that it works with optical mice: "which was true in our experience. We had no performance hiccups during our tests." BTOD disagrees on function, though it bought a Grovemade pad without saying whether it was the felt or the matte: "I believe this one is more for looks than function." BTOD found writing pretty much impossible, mouse glide inconsistent, coffee soaking in, and the pad sliding around the desk, though a dropped heavy item left no marks. Rosstopia's author makes it a top pick and owns other Grovemade products, but does not describe testing this mat. Popular Science describes the surface as vegan leather and TMRzoo as natural linoleum. MakerStations lists six sizes, from 11" x 24.75" to 26.5" x 49". [src1, src2, src13, src14, src15]

Felt Option: Oakywood Merino Wool & Cork Desk Mat, 24.4" x 11.8" — Check price

A Popular Science writer reports that the mat "didn't hinder the performance of my mouse" and shows no noticeable gunk buildup "in months of testing", while staying careful with spills because "the wool wouldn't repel it". That is the only hands-on test of this mat we read, and it does not say which size or colour it used, so it is an alternative. [src1]

• A group test in an article dated October 2026 favours cheap PU pads: BTOD's article, dated 25 October 2026, says "the budget PU pads outperform the premium options in most real-world tests". Its seven pads did not include the Twelve South, Orbitkey or Journey, so that conclusion does not reach them. [src2]

Important Caveats

• Size is the product. Several pads here come in more than one size, and a test of one size does not carry to another. This card says which size each outlet tested where the outlet says.
• Test age. The reviews behind both named picks were published or last updated in 2022 and 2023. Materials and listings can change after a review.
• These are reviewers' own trials. None of the reviews we read reports lab measurements, and BTOD says its results come from pads it bought and used itself. [src2]
• Mouse feel depends on the surface. BTOD says a Ktrio cloth gaming pad glided better than its PU pads but failed its writing and spill tests. Rosstopia's author, who has owned felt and cork mats, says threads on felt can catch on some mouse designs and that cork creates more mouse drag. For gaming surfaces, see the gaming mouse pads unit. • Mats ship rolled. CNN Underscored suggests weighting the corners overnight to flatten one. The Gadgeteer's Twelve South took several days to lie flat. [src3, src10]
• Material trade-offs. A Wayfair design manager tells CNN Underscored that felt is prone to staining and wear with heavy use, and an interior designer says synthetic mats are spill-resistant but may show wear sooner than other materials. [src10]
• Comfort is not treatment. A chiropractor tells CNN Underscored that soft mats can make a keyboard feel unstable and that thick mats can raise the forearms and elevate the shoulders.
