The Cuisinart PerfecTemp CPK-17P1 is the nearest thing this category has to a consensus. Wirecutter, which has tested kettles since 2013, says it "continues to be our favorite, thanks to its winning combination of speed, accuracy, and simple controls"; Reviewed gave it its top spot as "easy to use and speedily effective"; and CNN Underscored, after testing 15 kettles, says it "still sets the standard for what an electric kettle should be". [src1, src2, src3] Consumer Reports, which tested nine, lists it among its four top-scoring models. [src4] Not every tester agrees: CNET, which tested it in an earlier round, says its performance "is not commensurate with its $100 price" and cites customer reports that its auto-shut-off is defective, and WIRED says its features haven't kept up with the best newer kettles. Wirecutter has made the PerfecTemp its top pick since 2013. In its tests the CPK-17P1 brought 1 liter of water to a boil in around four minutes, "speedier than most kettles we tested", and water set to 185°F measured just 2 degrees over after 30 minutes on keep-warm. [src1] Reviewed's top-rated kettle has six presets between 160°F and 212°F and beeps when the water is ready, and CNN Underscored's thermometer found each setting exactly right or within 2 degrees. [src2, src3] Cuisinart lists six presets (Delicate, Green, White and Oolong tea, French Press, and Black & Herbal tea), a 30-minute keep-warm, 1500 watts, a two-minute memory when you lift the kettle off its base, and a limited three-year warranty, which Wirecutter calls the best of any kettle it has tested in this price range. [src2] CNET makes it its best budget kettle: four presets (white tea at 165°F, green at 175°F, oolong or coffee at 195°F, black tea or boil at 212°F), 5-degree adjustments, 4 cups boiled in 4 minutes 10 seconds and a full 1.7 liters in 6 minutes 18 seconds, a double-walled stainless kettle with a stay-cool plastic exterior, and a keep-warm that CNET says lasts 60 minutes. [src8] WIRED says it "has every feature we look for in an electric kettle" at an affordable price. [src9] The outlets disagree on accuracy: Reviewed's thermometer found the temperature "often varied, sometimes up to a difference of 10°F", while CNET lists an accurate temperature reading among its strengths. America's Test Kitchen's Best Buy is "nearly as fast at boiling water" as its winning OXO glass kettle and weighs less: the whole carafe lights up purplish-blue as it heats, it shuts off when the water boils, and a button on the back of the handle opens its gentle, slow-open lid. [src11] Its one quibble is the handle, "bulky and a little uncomfortable to hold, especially for people with small hands". [src11] WIRED's budget glass kettle, which WIRED links to the same Amazon listing America's Test Kitchen links in its text, is "affordable, easy to use, and durable": borosilicate glass that resists shattering, heavier than the stainless kettles WIRED tested, and "pretty much just a boiling machine" that boils a liter in four minutes. [src9, src11] TechGearLab, which tested the listing we link, ranked it 11th of 15 and found its pour "truly a mess with big drops instead of a coherent stream". Best for tea: Breville IQ Kettle BKE820XL — Check price

TechGearLab names the Breville IQ its best kettle for teas: set to 175°F for green tea it came within 0.6°F, the most accurate kettle in its review, and it was one of the fastest boilers in its lineup, with 1.8 liters of capacity and presets at 175, 185, 195, 200 and 212°F. [src10] Reviewed says "If you're serious about tea, it's a great pick": it "pulled ahead of the pack in every one of our tests" and edged out the Cuisinart "by one-one thousandth of a point", but the Cuisinart took Reviewed's top spot because it is "substantially cheaper". [src2] Wirecutter's sleeker-but-pricier pick works "just as well as the Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp, if not better in a few small ways": an open handle, a soft-open lid that releases steam slowly and a 20-minute keep-warm, though it has only a one-year warranty and does not switch to keep-warm by itself. [src1] The faults: TechGearLab found its pouring precision "frankly bad", and the lid-opening mechanism on its test unit worked only about half the time. [src8] Reviewed's best upgrade gooseneck had water for tea in about three and a half minutes and 205°F water for pour-over in just under five, and is "the priciest yet loveliest electric kettle we've ever tested". [src2] CNN Underscored, which tested it without picking it, gave it one of the highest pour scores but found you must reset its clock every time it is unplugged, and says the average coffee drinker can save a lot of money with a more basic model. Reviewed's best electric gooseneck "aced all of our tests": it had the fastest boil of any gooseneck Reviewed tested, let the tester slow the pour "to almost a drip", and keeps water warm for up to an hour; its faults are a 0.8-liter capacity, enough coffee for two, and a hard-to-see max line. [src2] CNET's best budget gooseneck boiled its full 0.8 liters in 4 minutes 17 seconds, and CNET says that "for $70, you can still have a quality gooseneck kettle that allows a slow, even pour". [src8] Cosori lists five presets (white 170°F, green 180°F, oolong 195°F, coffee 205°F and boil 212°F), 1200 watts, a hold of up to 60 minutes, and a kettle, lid and spout of food-grade stainless steel. [src13] TechGearLab, which linked a different listing of the Cosori Electric Gooseneck, measured the longest unbroken stream of its 15 kettles but found it 13.5°F off when set to 175°F, the widest miss in that test. Tom's Guide makes the Ninja Precision Temperature Kettle its best electric kettle overall and gave it five stars and an Editor's Choice: 60 ounces (1.7 liters), six presets plus custom temperatures, a 30-minute hold, and "Nothing at all" under reasons to avoid. [src5, src6] Its reviewer lives in the U.K., and the review lists a 3000W rating, so its boil times may come from a U.K. unit. [src6, src7] CNET tested the U.S. KT200 without picking it: its temperature readings were off by a degree or two, and the stainless finish was easy to dirty with fingerprints. [src8] No second outlet we read made it a pick, so it is an alternative.

Alternative (Wirecutter's budget pick): Hamilton Beach 40880 — Check price

Wirecutter's budget pick is a no-frills 1.7-liter stainless kettle with an on/off switch that, in its tests, heated water as quickly as the Cuisinart CPK-17P1, about four minutes for a liter, shut off automatically at the boil and poured without dripping. [src1] It has no temperature settings, no keep-warm and no beep when it is done; its lid has plastic hinges that Wirecutter finds less durable than the Cuisinart's metal ones; and it carries a one-year warranty.
