The guides we read do not agree on a best handheld vacuum. Wirecutter's top pick is the Ryobi 18V ONE+ Performance Hand Vacuum Kit, CNN Underscored's the Black+Decker Dustbuster AdvancedClean CHV1410L, RTINGS' and TechGearLab's the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+, Reviewed's and Vacuum Wars' the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser, Bob Vila's the Black+Decker Dustbuster AdvancedClean+ HHVK515J00FF and Today.com's a KitchenAid Go cordless vacuum. Consumer Reports lists its five top-rated handhelds without ranking them, and calls the Shark WandVac WV201 the highest-performing in its tests. The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser 2390A is our top pick because more of these guides recommend it than any other model: two name it the best handheld overall and two more the best for pet hair. Reviewed measured it removing 94% of its test dirt, the most of the nine models it tested, and it lifted cat hair off a couch cushion in a single pass. Vacuum Wars makes it its best overall at 4.61 stars, and CNN Underscored found its motorized brush picked up more pet hair than anything else it tested. Against it: it weighs 3 lb, its nozzle was too narrow for Cheerios in CNN's test, it has one power setting, and it runs about 14 to 19 minutes. Two outlets that tested it did not pick it. Wirecutter found it pulled clingy fur off pillows and upholstery better than its own pet pick but called it less powerful overall, and TechGearLab scored it 66 of 100. For less money, the Black+Decker Dustbuster AdvancedClean CHV1410L is Reviewed's best value and CNN Underscored's best handheld overall, and Consumer Reports found it picks up almost all the debris in its bare-floor and carpet tests. It runs only about 9 to 10 minutes per charge. The Black+Decker Dustbuster HHVI315JO42 is the budget pick at TechGearLab, which says it outperformed several more expensive models, and at Vacuum Wars, which rates its performance average and its price right. Testers split on the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ CH951. RTINGS and TechGearLab both make it their best overall for pickup on every surface; Wirecutter passed on it for poor airflow and suction and a six-hour charge, and CNN Underscored found its rubber-flap pet tool pulled up little hair. It is on this card for all-surface pickup rather than at the top. For pets, the Black+Decker Dustbuster Furbuster AdvancedClean+ HHVK515JP07 is the pick at Wirecutter and TechGearLab and the runner-up at Vacuum Wars, and runs longer per charge: 24 to 29 minutes in Wirecutter's and TechGearLab's tests, against 14 to 19 for the Bissell in Reviewed's. RTINGS rates its battery, about 10 minutes, as poor, notes it is not replaceable, and says it does a terrible job of sealing in dust and dander. CNN recommends it for the home as well; all those attachments need somewhere to live. Consumer Reports calls it "the highest-performing handheld vac in our tests": it aces pet hair and bare floors, reaches hard-to-reach places and is "not too shabby" on carpet, and at 1.4 lb it is one of the lightest CR tested. Its small bin may need emptying more than once on a large spill. [src2] RTINGS' best for allergies, because it seals in dust and dander better than most handhelds; it recommends the WV201 over the WV200 for its dock, and rates the battery at about 10 minutes. Wirecutter's best handheld for most jobs: from a single setting, suction close to or matching other hand vacuums' boost modes, 18 minutes of runtime, a recharge in under an hour where others took three to four, a 2.8-cup bin and a three-year warranty. The battery is replaceable and fits every Ryobi ONE+ tool. At 2.3 lb it is light, but the battery sits right under the handle and may strain a wrist, it cannot stand up, and the kit is sold only through Home Depot and has gone out of stock for days or weeks at a time. [src5] Consumer Reports counts it, as the HHVK515J00, among its five top-rated: good on bare floors and solid on carpet, excellent in narrow spaces, one of the quieter handhelds and averaging 23 minutes per charge, but CR points pet owners to another model. One of Consumer Reports' five top-rated: an average runtime of about 24 minutes, one of the longest CR measured, and it excels at pet hair and bare floors, but it is weaker in narrow spaces, weighs 4 lb and is pricey. [src2] Tom's Guide recommends it after cleaning a family car with it: it sucked up gravel, dust and ingrained crumbs and gave "a solid, fade-free performance after 35 minutes", but holding the trigger got tiring, and it weighs 4.2 lb. [src9] Wirecutter rates its cleaning among the best it has tested, but calls it essentially the Dyson V8 stick vacuum's handheld repackaged: it "costs three times as much as our top pick, but it isn't an appreciably better cleaner". Wirecutter's Budget Pick: Black+Decker Dustbuster Blast HNVD220J00 — Check price

Wirecutter's budget pick, for people without pets who need a hand vacuum for occasional spills: 2.4 lb with the battery and motor in the middle, a narrow body that is easy to store, and a trigger that runs the suction only while you hold it. It ran almost 14 minutes with the trigger held and charges in four hours; it cleans counters and furniture but not hair from upholstery. [src1] No other guide we read picks it. We could not confirm it on sale when we checked on 2026-10-09: Black+Decker's own store no longer has a page for it (its old address leads to the home page), and Amazon's listing showed no featured offer to our connection, which is outside the US. Bob Vila's Best Bang for the Buck: Dirt Devil Scorpion Plus QuickFlip SD20005RED — Check price

Bob Vila's best bang for the buck, which it calls the Dirt Devil Scorpion Quick Flip Corded Hand Vacuum and links to the Amazon listing this card uses: a 7-amp motor that picked up small stones and stubborn sand, a 16-foot cord, a 2.5-foot hose, a crevice tool that flips into place, and 3.8 lb. Its brush did little for hair and dust. [src5] Bob Vila last updated that guide in October 2024. Wirecutter, which tested a Dirt Devil Scorpion Quick Flip among other corded handhelds, recommends none: it found them no better at cleaning than its picks and much less convenient. RTINGS' Best Cheap: Bissell AeroSlim 29869 — Check price

RTINGS' best cheap handheld: the smallest and most portable it tested, with a crevice tool and a slide-on soft brush and about 15 minutes per charge, but a weak motor that struggles with heavier debris, a bin that fills fast, and USB charging that takes over three hours. [src3] CNN Underscored found it one of the top ultra-compact models it tested and surprisingly powerful, but Cheerios did not fit its nozzle and its 3.3 oz canister was too small. [src7] Reviewed measured 83% pickup, less than the Shark WandVac, at 1.3 lb with 14 minutes of battery, and TechGearLab, which scored it 39 of 100, found it "just wasn't powerful enough to pick up much of anything". • Runtimes vary with the power setting and the test. Makers' claims run longer than most measurements: Dyson claims up to 50 minutes for the Car+Boat, while Consumer Reports measured an average of about 24. [src9, src2]
