Summary

How the field was judged. This comparison rests on nine buying guides and four single-model tests. Vacuum Wars ranks more than 110 cordless vacuums it bought and benchmarked; RTINGS, Consumer Reports, TechGearLab and Reviewed also test in labs; Engadget, Wirecutter, CNN Underscored, Tom's Guide, TechRadar and Bob Vila test hands-on. Dyson. The Dyson V15 Detect is the model the others are measured against: best overall at Vacuum Wars, RTINGS and Engadget, and TechGearLab's best premium pick [src1, src2, src3, src11]. The Dyson Gen5detect cleans at least as well (Tom's Guide's top pick and TechGearLab's Best of the Best, first in its ranking; 87.5% of Reviewed's carpet dirt in one pass), but RTINGS, Engadget and CNN Underscored all judge it too expensive for the gain, and Wirecutter found it heavier and less comfortable than the V12 [src7, src11, src4, src2, src3, src6, src5]. Dyson's newest flagship, the Dyson V16 Piston Animal, disappointed: TechRadar found the older Gen5detect cleaned better and the V16's pointed floorhead misses room edges, and Tom's Guide also saw it struggle edge to edge [src9, src7]. The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is Wirecutter's top pick for its light weight, with a tiny bin [src5]. The Dyson V8 Cyclone is CNN Underscored's best cordless stick and removed all the embedded sand in Vacuum Wars' carpet test, for well under the price of the V15 [src6, src13].

Shark. The Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty (IP3251) is the self-emptying pick at Wirecutter, Tom's Guide and Engadget [src5, src7, src3]. Shark also sells a cheaper, different model, the PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty; Vacuum Wars ranks it eighth, citing weak unsealed suction, a 500 mL bin, no DuoClean roller and no Edge Detect [src1]. The Shark Stratos Cordless (IZ862H) is RTINGS' mid-range pick and fourth at Vacuum Wars, with a perfect carpet deep-clean score, but RTINGS found it heavy and slow to recharge [src2, src1].

Samsung, Levoit and Tineco. The Samsung Bespoke AI Jet Ultra (VS90F40DMK/AA) is Consumer Reports' top-rated cordless stick, while RTINGS rates it below the V15 Detect; Samsung.com showed it out of stock on 2026-10-13 [src8, src2, src16]. Consumer Reports and Reviewed also rate Samsung's cheaper Bespoke AI Jet Lite highly, and RTINGS and Consumer Reports the Miele Duoflex HX1; neither is in this comparison yet [src8, src4, src2]. The Levoit LVAC-200 and Levoit LVAC-300 are the budget pair: Engadget prefers the LVAC-300, and Vacuum Wars, which measured both, says the LVAC-200 is the better value [src3, src12]. Tineco's Pure ONE S70 has an Engadget honorable mention and a 4.9/5 from Bob Vila, and Reviewed calls the Pure ONE A90S the smartest cordless vacuum [src3, src14, src4].

The Dyson V15 Detect is first in Vacuum Wars' lab rankings: it "still sets the benchmark for cordless performance", with 124 inches of sealed suction and 17.6 kPa of unsealed suction, a green laser on the Fluffy Optic head that shows dust on hard floors, a particle sensor that raises power on heavier dirt, and a 4.6-lb handle. RTINGS calls it the best cordless vacuum it has tested: impressive pickup on bare floors and carpet, outstanding pet hair pickup, an air filter nearly perfect at keeping dust out of the air, and just over six pounds in weight; its battery covers apartments and smaller homes on low and medium power but may run out in a large home with a lot of carpet. Engadget rarely had to go over the same spot twice. TechGearLab measured 64 minutes on Eco and 9 on Boost, and, like Engadget, dislikes the trigger you must hold down the whole time. Wirecutter found it did not clean significantly better than the lighter V12 Detect Slim, though its bin is twice the size. Amazon listed it in stock when we checked on 2026-10-13, though it is not yet in our price checks; Vacuum Wars showed $829.99 at Amazon when we read its rankings on 2026-10-13. Best Value: Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty (IP3251) — Check price

Vacuum Wars named the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty its Best Overall Cordless Vacuum of 2025 and still ranks it third: perfect scores in its carpet deep-clean and hard-floor pickup tests, sensors that adjust power, roller speed and edge cleaning to the floor, sealed HEPA-grade filtration, and a dock that empties the bin into a bagless reservoir holding about 45 days of dirt. Wirecutter's top pick with a self-emptying station, it picked up Cheerios, birdseed, sand and dust about as well as the Dyson V12 Detect Slim and ran about 58 minutes in eco mode on one charge, the longest of Wirecutter's picks (Shark claims up to 70); Wirecutter found it struggles with pet fur and is notably louder than its other picks, and notes Shark's five-year warranty but says replacement parts, including batteries, can be hard to find. Tom's Guide, which names it the best stick vacuum, found its base held weeks of household debris but calls the vacuum top-heavy and the auto-empty loud. Engadget's runner-up overall, at $500 when it tested, is "not as powerful as our top pick, but it didn't choke at the first sign of pet hair". Amazon listed it in stock when we checked on 2026-10-13, though it is not yet in our price checks; Vacuum Wars showed $549.00 at Amazon when we read its rankings on 2026-10-13. Do not confuse it with the cheaper Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty, a different model that Vacuum Wars ranks eighth: lighter, but with weak unsealed suction, a 500 mL bin, no DuoClean roller and no Edge Detect. [src1]

Best Budget: Levoit LVAC-200 — Check price

Vacuum Wars calls the Levoit LVAC-200 "the best value cordless vacuum currently available" and, after testing it against the Levoit LVAC-300, "the smarter choice for most households". Both removed 96% of the sand embedded in its test carpet (the cordless average is 93%) and wrapped none of the hair in its 14-inch tangle test; the LVAC-200 measured 82 inches of sealed suction, scored 3.5 of 5 on hard-floor pickup, and ran about 12 minutes at full power. Engadget's budget runner-up, it has three suction modes, a single-button start and a five-stage filter that is not HEPA; Engadget kept it on its strongest mode for carpet and needed a couple of passes for larger debris. TechGearLab ranked it just behind its budget pick, a little better on pet hair from low-pile carpet but weak on rugs. Tom's Guide names the Dyson Gen5detect its best vacuum of any type and the first cordless it has tested that makes whole-home cleaning practical, with 280AW of suction, up to 70 minutes in Eco and a 27-ounce bin, but a heavy body and 85 dB in Boost. TechGearLab's Best of the Best (first in its ranking) "beat out the competitors in almost every test" and is the most expensive cordless vacuum it has tested. Reviewed, which names it best for pet owners, measured 87.5% of the dirt off its carpets in a single pass, 25% more than the average cordless vacuum. The others question the price: RTINGS says it performs slightly better than the V15 Detect but is much more expensive with no meaningful quality-of-life improvements, Engadget says its single-button start and stronger suction do not outweigh the V15's value, and CNN Underscored calls it extremely expensive when cheaper vacuums perform as well; Wirecutter found it heavier and less comfortable than the V12. Wirecutter's top pick: the Dyson V12 Detect Slim "comes closer to being an ideal stick vac than any model we've tested", weighs just over 5 pounds, removed almost all of the baking soda spread on medium-pile rugs and runs about 45 minutes. Its weak points are a tiny 12-ounce bin, a four-hour recharge and that it cannot stand on its own. Vacuum Wars ranks it fifth and highlights its 3.3-lb handle, laser head and particle counter. RTINGS finds it easier to handle than the V15 Detect but a notable step back on carpet and pet hair. CNN Underscored dropped it from its guide as no longer available, though Vacuum Wars still showed it at $669.00 at Amazon when we read its rankings on 2026-10-13. [src5, src1, src2, src6]

RTINGS' best mid-range cordless vacuum, the Shark Stratos Cordless feels much sturdier than the V15 Detect, has a HEPA filter and an hour-long battery, but weighs over 8 lbs, takes nearly four hours to recharge, and its floorhead gets stuck on thick-pile rugs. Vacuum Wars ranks it fourth with a perfect 100% carpet deep-clean score and flawless debris pickup on hard floors and carpet, and gave it its 2025 awards for both hard floors and carpets. Consumer Reports' top-rated cordless stick vacuum: the Samsung Bespoke AI Jet Ultra is "stellar at cleaning bare floors and pet hair", unlike many sticks "very good at cleaning carpets", and has one of the longest average run times Consumer Reports measured; its charging station empties the bin automatically, and it detects floor types to set suction and brush speed. RTINGS disagrees on performance: it recommends the Ultra to buyers who put air quality first, for its self-emptying dock, but says it "performs worse overall and drains its battery much faster" than the V15 Detect. Buy it with caution, because it is hard to buy: Amazon had no purchasable offer in our 2026-10-12 check, Samsung.com showed it out of stock at $1,099.99 with delivery and pickup not available on 2026-10-13, and Consumer Reports' model data marks it "Discontinued, Not Avail." CNN Underscored's best cordless stick vacuum: the Dyson V8 Cyclone "just upstaged the previously undefeated Dyson V15 Detect" by being lighter, cheaper and faster to charge, with 150 air watts, a power button instead of a trigger and a swappable battery; CNN wishes the bin were bigger and more tools came in the box. Vacuum Wars, which bought one, measured 58 CFM of airflow and 101 inches of sealed suction, and it removed 100% of the embedded sand in its carpet test; it ran 8.4 minutes at full power, has a 530 mL bin, ships with only a crevice tool, and tangled in one of three hair runs. Vacuum Wars calls it "the best V8 that Dyson has ever made". It is not yet in our price checks; Vacuum Wars showed $299.99 at Amazon (down from $399.99) on 2026-10-13. [src6, src13]

On paper the Dyson V16 Piston Animal leads Dyson's range, with 315AW against the Gen5detect's 280AW, a bin that compresses dirt to hold 1.3L, and much longer Boost runtime (just under 17 minutes in TechRadar's test against 8 for the Gen5detect on carpet). In TechRadar's side-by-side test, though, the Gen5detect picked up fine and large debris better, and the V16's pointed floorhead struggles at room edges; Tom's Guide also found it struggled with edge-to-edge cleaning and was awkward to empty into a small bin. The Submarine version, the same vacuum plus a mopping head, ranks second at Vacuum Wars, which found it matched the standard V16 on vacuuming, but both RTINGS and CNN Underscored found that version cleaned worse than cheaper Dysons. Engadget's best budget cordless vacuum: the Levoit LVAC-300 handles more smoothly than its earlier budget pick, has HEPA filtration, a removable battery and three modes, and cleaned Engadget's main floor more than three times before the bin needed emptying. In Vacuum Wars' head-to-head it beat the LVAC-200 on sealed suction (94 against 82 inches) and hard-floor pickup (4 against 3.5 of 5) and adds a motorized upholstery tool, ranking slightly higher overall; Vacuum Wars still judges the cheaper LVAC-200 the better value. Engadget gives the Tineco Pure ONE S70 an honorable mention for its handling, a flexible neck for reaching under furniture and a light that covers 150 degrees in front of the head; its base charges but does not empty the bin. Bob Vila rated it 4.9/5 after a month against four other sticks: it passed every cleaning test, pulled dust out of gaps between floorboards, and cleaned a 2,000-plus square-foot home on Auto with battery to spare, at 6.77 pounds with a 0.6-liter bin. Its 95-minute rating applies with the crevice tool; with the floor head Tineco rates 65 minutes on Eco. Reviewed calls the Tineco Pure ONE A90S its smartest cordless vacuum: 270 AW of suction, a 3D SmartLift system that lifts the brush head to take in large debris such as cereal, floor-type sensing, an LED ring that turns from red to blue as an area gets clean, an app with remote settings and cleaning logs, and a tube that folds 180 degrees to reach under low furniture. Reviewed is the only outlet we read that recommends it, and it publishes no pickup measurement for it. It was in stock at $599.00 from TINECO, a marketplace seller on Amazon, in our 2026-10-12 check. Vacuum Wars ran the Dyson V8 Cyclone 8.4 minutes at full power against a 60-minute Eco rating; TechGearLab measured the Dyson V15 Detect at 64 minutes on Eco but 9 on Boost; TechRadar got 8 minutes of Boost from the Dyson Gen5detect on carpet; and the Tineco Pure ONE S70's 95 minutes applies with the crevice tool, not the floor head.
