"Free" means $0 to start, not $0 total: battle passes, cosmetic shops and gacha banners pay for every game here, and live-service games can close. The picks follow the free-game guides of GamesRadar+, PC Gamer and PCGamesN and the reviews cited in each section below [src1, src4, src5].

The independent free-game guides agree on most of this list. GamesRadar+ keeps three separate rankings: Fortnite is first on its all-platform list and its PC list, Counter-Strike 2 is first on its Steam list, and Warframe is second on the all-platform list [src1, src2, src3]. PC Gamer's free-to-play list (alphabetical, not ranked) and PCGamesN's best free PC games both include Fortnite, Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, Marvel Rivals and Path of Exile [src4, src5]. We put Fortnite first because it tops two of GamesRadar+'s rankings, appears on both other guides and runs on nearly every platform; Warframe takes the co-op/PvE slot because GamesRadar+ ranks it second overall and PCGamesN backs it as the deep co-op choice; and Counter-Strike 2 takes the competitive slot because it tops GamesRadar+'s Steam list and both PC Gamer and PCGamesN single it out as a competitive shooter [src1, src2, src3, src4, src5].

The list is stable, but the games keep changing underneath it. Overwatch dropped the "2" and relaunched on February 10, 2026 with five new heroes, Marvel Rivals' Season 10 began on September 11, 2026 with Gorr the God Butcher, and Path of Exile 2 leaves paid early access to go free-to-play at its 1.0 release on December 11, 2026 [src14, src13, src23]. GamesRadar+ ranks Fortnite first among the best free games on any platform and again first among free PC games: free to play on just about everything, it has become the start of a true cultural platform for concerts, trailer debuts and virtual hangouts, with a free Creative mode beside Battle Royale [src1, src2]. PCGamesN calls it the most significant cultural shift in gaming since League of Legends, built on weekly updates and seasonal changes; simple shooting and rules keep it accessible, and building adds depth [src5]. Trusted Reviews, which reviewed it in 2020, calls it one of the finest battle royale experiences on the market, though less mechanically complex in combat than Apex Legends [src6]. Monetization is cosmetic: GamesRadar+ notes that V-Bucks are reserved solely for cosmetic purchases, and the battle pass rewards regular players [src2, src5]. GamesRadar+ calls Riot's 5v5 shooter an intriguing blend of the tactical and hero shooter genres: everyone has the same guns, and agents' abilities change each round [src2]. Only five agents are open at the start; PCGamesN notes you can unlock more through agent contracts without opening your wallet, and GamesRadar+ adds that one-time purchases and cosmetics are the paid side [src5, src1]. It has been out on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S since 2024 [src16]. On Windows it uses Riot's kernel-level Vanguard anti-cheat, the same system League of Legends adopted [src17].

Best Hero Shooter: Marvel Rivals (Free) — Find it

GamesRadar+ ranks NetEase's 6v6 Marvel hero shooter fifth among free PC games and calls it a fantastic free Steam game that adds new characters and maps every season [src2, src3]. PC Gamer scored it 73: a well-made hero shooter that is easy to enjoy, but one that has fallen into the same pitfalls as Overwatch 2, with NetEase's work cut out to balance it [src11]. It peaked at 644,269 concurrent Steam players on January 11, 2025, and it still runs on a seasonal cadence: Season 10 began on September 11, 2026 with Gorr the God Butcher, a Scarlet Witch rework and a new battle pass [src12, src13]. It plays on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X with crossplay [src1]. If you prefer 5v5 squads where roles matter, PC Gamer says the relaunched Overwatch is well worth a look [src4, src14].

GamesRadar+ ranks Respawn's hero battle royale fourth on both its all-platform and PC lists and says that for fans of smooth shooting action, it doesn't get better than Apex; its Steam list calls it perhaps the best of the free battle royales [src1, src2, src3]. PC Gamer still calls it its pick for the best FPS on a sprawling, freeform map, and PCGamesN singles out its movement and contextual pings [src4, src5]. It plays on PC, PlayStation and Xbox [src1]. The original Nintendo Switch version stopped working on August 4, 2026 (Season 30); the Switch 2 version continues, and progress, cosmetics and Apex Coins carry over to it [src18].

Best Destructible-Arena Shooter: The Finals (Free) — Find it

Embark Studios' game-show shooter makes the arena itself a weapon: PC Gamer highlights an environment both teams can manipulate, and GamesRadar+ lists it among the best free Steam games for its fast-twitch gunplay and destructible environments [src4, src3]. PCGamesN notes it pits teams of three against each other [src5]. More than 10 million people played it in its first two weeks; it is monetized through cosmetics and battle passes on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S [src19].

Best Open-World Gacha RPG: Genshin Impact (Free) — Find it

GamesRadar+ ranks HoYoverse's open-world action RPG third among all free games, likening its open world to Breath of the Wild with smooth, anime-inspired combat, and warns that its gacha elements will gobble up disposable income if you chase particular characters, though you can ignore them and play the story [src1]. PC Gamer says Where Winds Meet, Everstone Studio's Wuxia RPG set in 10th-century China, is among the best options for a ridiculously lengthy open world for nothing, updated very regularly with monthly roadmaps [src4, src5]. PCGamesN calls it an entirely free 100+ hour epic that mixes Souls-like combat with gacha elements, with co-op you unlock as you play [src5]. It launched on PC and PS5 in late 2025, came to iPhone and Android with cross-progression on December 12, 2025, and to Xbox Series X/S in June 2026 [src4, src21, src22].

Best Action RPG: Path of Exile (Free) — Find it

GamesRadar+ ranks Valve's MOBA fourth among free Steam games, one of the deepest experiences on PC with one of the most high-stakes esports scenes, all for no cost, and calls it one of the biggest PC games in history [src3, src1]. Valve's founding rule was that every hero is free to every player and every store item cosmetic: "Dota 2 will not be a pay-to-win game" [src25]. PCGamesN calls it tough and complex, with hundreds of thousands of players every day [src5]. PC only [src1]. League of Legends, first on PCGamesN's list, is the alternative that PCGamesN says many players find easier and more accessible than Dota [src5].

Best Casual / Cross-Platform Party Game: Rocket League (Free) — Find it

GamesRadar+ puts Psyonix's rocket-car soccer among the best free PC games for its pixel-perfect gameplay and massive skill ceiling, under a free-to-play model funded by cosmetics, playable through the Epic Games Store [src2]. PCGamesN notes full cross-play across every platform, a spectacular esports scene and a big casual scene, and says it is a lot of fun to play with friends [src5].

Valorant vs Counter-Strike 2

Both are free 5v5 tactical shooters with precise gunplay, at opposite ends of a design spectrum. Valorant layers agent abilities over shared guns and runs on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S; Counter-Strike 2 is pure gunplay and round economy that PCGamesN calls exceptionally balanced, PC only [src2, src16, src5, src1]. GamesRadar+ ranks Counter-Strike 2 above Valorant on both lists where both appear [src1, src2].
