How the field was judged. This comparison rests on six car-vacuum guides (RTINGS, Wirecutter, CNN Underscored, Good Housekeeping, AutoGuide and Vacuum Wars), four handheld guides (TechGearLab, CNN Underscored, Vacuum Wars and Reviewed) and Tom's Guide's hands-on test of the Dyson Car+Boat. Good Housekeeping, Reviewed and Vacuum Wars measure in a lab or studio; Wirecutter, CNN Underscored, TechGearLab, AutoGuide and Tom's Guide also cleaned real cars. Battery handhelds. The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is RTINGS' best car vacuum and TechGearLab's best handheld, but CNN Underscored, which tested it in both of its guides, found it hard to use inside the car and weak on pet hair [src1, src6, src3, src7]. The Black+Decker CHV1410L is AutoGuide's editor's pick, CNN Underscored's best handheld and Reviewed's best value [src5, src7, src14]. The Black+Decker dustbuster AdvancedClean+ Pet (HHVK515JP07) is the pet-hair pick at Wirecutter, Good Housekeeping and TechGearLab and Vacuum Wars' handheld runner-up [src2, src4, src6, src8]. Vacuum Wars argues that a compact corded wet/dry vac is the best tool for a car: in its testing, shop vacs averaged 64 inches of water lift, larger Dustbuster-style handhelds 26 and mini battery car vacuums 5. Its pick is the Armor All AA255W [src9]. AutoGuide's best wet/dry vacuum for cars is a different kit, the Armor All AA255 [src5]. Armor All's own spec pages give both the same 6-amp, 53 CFM rating, 2.5-gallon tank and 6-foot hose; the AA255W adds three extension wands, a round dust brush and a floor nozzle and has a 12-foot cord against the AA255's 10 feet [src15, src16].

Picks we do not list. Good Housekeeping's best overall, the DeWalt DCV517B, removed 99.9% of fine particles and 94.7% of larger debris from low-pile carpet in one pass, but it ships without a battery [src4]. CNN Underscored's best battery-powered pick is the Ryobi One+ 18-Volt GoGoVac and its best mini is the Skil Brushless Slim Vacuum Kit [src3]. RTINGS' best cordless car vacuum is the Dyson V8, a stick vacuum whose Absolute variant includes a car kit [src1]. AutoGuide still lists the Dyson V12 Detect Slim as its pick if price doesn't matter [src5]. Each of these has one tester behind it among the guides we read. The Black+Decker HHVI315JO42 is the budget handheld at both TechGearLab and Vacuum Wars, but no car guide we read picks it, and Reviewed found it one of the weaker cleaners it tested [src6, src8, src14].

What left the card. RTINGS removed the Dyson V15 Detect from its car guide on 2026-10-08 and the Dyson V12 Detect Slim on 2026-08-24, to focus on handhelds, so both leave this card [src1]. Milwaukee's page said its M18 FUEL Compact Vacuum (0940-20), AutoGuide's pick for Milwaukee battery owners, was no longer available when we checked on 2026-10-14 [src13, src5]. AutoGuide does not recommend the ThisWorx Model 1.0 ("It's a bad vacuum cleaner"), and neither it nor Wirecutter recommends any 12V plug-in car vacuum [src5, src2]. Vacuum Wars' car guide now names one pick, the Armor All, and mentions the Vacmaster Beast only as within the largest size it considers practical [src9]. No guide we read recommends the Craftsman CMXEVBE17925 wall vac, the Milwaukee 0880-20, the DeWalt DCV501HB, the Fanttik V8 Mate Upgraded or the ThisWorx TWC-01 for cars. CNN Underscored tested a different Fanttik, the Slim V8 Apex, and found its canister minuscule [src3].

RTINGS' best car vacuum for most people: an affordable handheld that feels better built than its price suggests, weighs just over 2 pounds and fits in a trunk, with a crevice tool, an upholstery tool, a hard-bristle brush and a small turbo brush, so you can clean most of a car without buying extras. It handles crumbs and debris on hard surfaces, carpet and floor mats, has a large dirt compartment for a handheld and recharges in about 2.5 hours. RTINGS' reservations: one power setting and 11 minutes per charge, a battery you cannot replace, no extension wand, fine dust escaping from the exhaust, and a turbo brush that struggles to lift pet hair from fabric seats. TechGearLab scored it 85 of 100, its best handheld: its tester found the crevice tool reached "the tiny cracks in my car that most vacuums can't reach at all", measured 2.8 lb and 14.7 minutes, and liked the button that drops the debris straight out. Reviewed measured it picking up 87% of its test dirt but found the crevice tool a bit short. CNN Underscored is the dissenter: in its car test the weight sat at the end opposite the handle and the crevice nozzle was too short, and in its handheld test the rubber-flap pet tool pulled up little hair and the unit's size made it hard to use inside the car. Best Budget: Black+Decker dustbuster AdvancedClean (CHV1410L) — Check price

AutoGuide's editor's pick and "by far our favorite for cleaning a car": 2.6 lb, a 20.6-ounce bowl, a built-in crevice tool and a charging base, and a battery Black+Decker says holds a charge for up to 18 months, but about four hours to charge, and larger and a little louder than most 12V vacuums. CNN Underscored's best handheld, which it tested as the CHV1410L32, was "the easiest to use, charge and empty of all the handheld vacuums we tested", picked up all its test debris including Cheerios, and has a 20.6-ounce canister; it has no flat upholstery tool, and CNN Underscored calls it "a no-brainer" at its price. Reviewed's best value picked up 80% of its test dirt against the Shark's 87%, with "only average suction" and up to 10 minutes per charge. TechGearLab scored it 59 of 100, with a weak crevice tool. Three testers tried it beside the Bissell AeroSlim and ranked it higher: CNN Underscored and Reviewed picked it and not the AeroSlim, and TechGearLab scored the AeroSlim 39; in Reviewed's dirt test, though, the AeroSlim picked up slightly more, 83% to 80%. Wirecutter's best car vacuum for pet fur: its motorized brush with rubber bristles cleaned pet fur from cars better than any other handheld Wirecutter tested, its 25-ounce bin was the largest it tested, and it ran 24 minutes on low and charged in about three hours; the built-in crevice tool is too large and stiff for extra-tight spots, the filters sometimes slip out when you empty it, and the battery is not replaceable. Good Housekeeping's pet pick holds its own against full-size vacuums, carries a three-star Quiet Mark rating, and weighs 4.2 lb; its side vents can blow debris around. TechGearLab's pet pick (79 of 100) ran 29.1 minutes, but its tester found the crevice tool "just didn't do much of anything" in a car. CNN Underscored's best car vacuum: its tester found its suction broke up dirt and Cheerios in the ridges of rubber floor mats, its curved handle and 4-foot hose made reaching under seats easier on the back and knees, and it has held up after more than two years. It ran about 14 minutes and took a little more than 3.5 hours to recharge. CNN Underscored's handheld guide also makes it the best handheld for the car. Wirecutter's pick for ease of use, especially for people with hand or wrist problems: the hose reaches under the seats and behind the pedals, but it struggled with larger debris, ran 12 minutes, took four hours to recharge and was noisier than most; the battery is not replaceable. Wirecutter's top pick for cars and its favorite overall cleaner: it picked up Cheerios, sand and dust on and between car seats, holds 22 ounces, twice the capacity of most handhelds Wirecutter tested, ran a full 18 minutes on its highest setting and recharges in about an hour. It has a three-year warranty and a replaceable battery that fits other Ryobi ONE+ tools. Its bulk makes it hard to get under car seats, and the battery under the handle can strain the wrist. TechGearLab scored it 69 of 100, fourth of 11, with strong suction but ineffective attachments and poor results on fabric. Good Housekeeping's best value: in its lab it cleared an average of 94% of the dirt in a single pass, without using its highest setting, and its 4-foot hose and attachments reach tight corners; the dust cup cannot be removed for emptying. Wirecutter's best compact design stores its tools on board, has a replaceable battery and a three-year warranty, ran 25 minutes on low (about 10 on high) and recharged in an hour, but struggled with heavier debris and holds only 6 ounces. Best Ultra-Compact: Bissell AeroSlim (29869) — Check price

Good Housekeeping's best portable car vacuum: it "delivered surprisingly strong suction" in its lab tests and charges over USB, so it can stay in the car; it weighs 1.3 lb, with a claimed 12 minutes per charge. RTINGS suggests the AeroSlim/TurboSlim for tight budgets: smaller and lighter than its cheap pick and better at lifting pet hair from carpets, with a much smaller dirt compartment. CNN Underscored found it one of the top ultra-compact models it tested and convenient in its car, but Cheerios did not fit its nozzle and its 3.3-ounce canister was a little too small. Reviewed found it not very powerful (83% of its test dirt) but worth a look for spot-cleaning car seats, because it charges over USB. Good Housekeeping's pick for run time: Dyson claims up to 50 minutes, it comes with a mini motorized brush, a combination tool and a crevice tool, and its whole-machine filtration traps 99.99% of particles down to 0.3 microns; it is pricier and heavier than most handhelds at 4.2 lb. Tom's Guide's tester cleaned a family car's trunk, seats and floor mats with it and still had "unwavering power" after about 35 minutes, but found the trigger, which must be held down, tricky at angles inside the car; the battery cannot be removed and takes up to five hours to recharge. TechGearLab scored it 56 of 100: its strong suction pulled in loose fabric until the vacuum shut off, and it calls it "terrible on upholstery". [src4, src10, src6]

Vacuum Wars' best handheld vacuum (4.61 stars): its motorized brush lifts pet hair and embedded dirt from upholstery and car interiors, with triple-level filtration and a 700 mL bin, but one power setting and limited battery. Reviewed's best handheld, which it calls the 2390, removed 94% of its test dirt and pulled cat hair from a couch cushion in one pass. CNN Underscored's best handheld for pet hair pulled dog hair embedded deep in its test Jeep Wrangler's carpet and has a 23.6-ounce canister, the largest it tested, and 17 minutes of battery; its bulk may make it less maneuverable in a smaller car and its nozzle was too narrow for Cheerios. Vacuum Wars names the Armor All AA255W its best car vacuum for most people after testing shop vacs, full-size cordless vacuums, handhelds, mini battery vacuums, vacuums that plug into the car's DC outlet and coin-operated car-wash vacuums. It measured 66 inches of water lift, slightly above its average for wet/dry vacuums, in a 2.5-gallon body small enough to carry around a car, and Vacuum Wars singles out its claw-style car nozzle and small detailing brushes; it says the AA255W can even cost less than some cordless handhelds. Buy it with caution: it needs an outlet and may need an extension cord, heavily embedded pet hair may need a separate brush, and Vacuum Wars is the only guide we read that tested this exact kit, which is why this card lists it as an alternative and names no value pick. AutoGuide's best wet/dry vacuum for cars is a different kit, the Armor All AA255: two horsepower, a six-foot hose, a 10-foot cord, a car nozzle, crevice tool, detail brush and blower nozzle, and small enough to get inside the car [src5]. We do not count it as a review of the AA255W. Armor All's spec pages rate both at 6 amps, 53 CFM and 2 peak HP with the same 2.5-gallon tank and 6-foot hose; the AA255W adds three extension wands, a round dust brush and a floor/squeegee nozzle, and has a 12-foot cord and a tool weight of 9.77 lb against the AA255's 10-foot cord and 7.41 lb. Important Caveats

• Testers disagree at the top: the six car guides we read name six different best car vacuums, so read the section for the model you are considering, not only its label. [src1, src2, src3, src4, src5, src9]
• Runtimes differ by tester and setting: RTINGS measured the Shark at 11 minutes and TechGearLab at 14.7; Dyson claims up to 50 minutes for the Car+Boat. [src1, src6, src4]
• Several batteries cannot be replaced: RTINGS notes it for the Shark, Wirecutter for the Black+Decker Flex and dustbuster AdvancedClean+ Pet, and Tom's Guide for the Dyson Car+Boat. When the battery dies, so does the vacuum. [src1, src2, src10]
• The Armor All AA255W needs an outlet and may need an extension cord.
