Summary

Eight outlets tested these packs hands-on. Wirecutter has tested more than 75 backpacks since 2015; for its June 2026 update its writer spent three months carrying 40 of them, with two colleagues, on trains, buses, bikes and planes. Outdoor Gear Lab bought 20 laptop bags and tested them side by side, scoring comfort and fit (30%), laptop protection (20%), storage and organization (20%), ease of use (15%) and versatility (15%), and hosing each one for 30 seconds. CNN Underscored's tester compared the bags he called in using one or two 16-inch laptops (March 2024). Pack Hacker reviews packs one at a time over weeks of use and names favorites in a laptop-bag guide last updated in July 2026, and GearJunkie's August 2026 travel backpack guide includes laptop-carrying packs. The Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe is the top pick: Outdoor Gear Lab's best overall laptop bag, Wirecutter's pick for toting lots of tech and CNN Underscored's pick for carrying several laptops. The Troubadour Apex Backpack 4.0 is Wirecutter's polished office pick, and the EVERGOODS CIVIC Panel Loader 24L the premium build, "built like a tank" in Outdoor Gear Lab's words. The ALPAKA Bravo 23L is Pack Hacker's best work bag and the Osprey Nebula 32 CleverHiker's best commuter pack. The Aer City Pack Pro 2 24L, Thule Chasm Laptop Backpack 26L and Matein Travel are listed as alternatives, because only one outlet we read recommends each. Outdoor Gear Lab's best overall laptop bag, with the second-highest score (76) of the 20 it tested and the joint-highest laptop-protection score (8.5, with the EVERGOODS). Its testers found the fabric beads water and the bottom fully waterproof, liked the bubble padding on the straps and back and the trolley strap for riding it on roller luggage; the drawbacks they list include a narrow profile and one water-bottle pocket too skinny for a 1-liter Nalgene. Wirecutter, which picks it for toting lots of tech, packed a 13-inch laptop, keyboard, tablet, two power banks and a Nintendo Switch Lite into its 20 liters with room to spare, and notes the compression straps, the waterproof boot and Timbuk2's lifetime warranty; it does not have a suspended laptop compartment like Wirecutter's Aer and Troubadour picks. CNN Underscored fit three laptops in it at once and found the rear sleeve's protection the strongest and thickest of its round. Pack Hacker scored it 7.9 of 10, praising the three-compartment layout and dense harness padding but noting there is no false bottom in the laptop compartment. Best Polished Office Backpack: Troubadour Apex Backpack 4.0 (22L) — Check price

Wirecutter's best polished laptop backpack "for the office and beyond": "smart enough for the boardroom", with a fluorocarbon-free waterproofing treatment and zippers set in waterproof tape that kept its tester's laptop dry in drizzly weather, plush ventilated back panels, and a rear laptop compartment that holds a computer of up to 17 inches suspended above the base of the bag. Wirecutter's flaws: it is expensive, and the fully covered zipper can make the laptop compartment tricky to open. Macworld lists 22 liters (down from the Apex 3.0's 25), a Crashpad Cocoon that also holds a smaller laptop or iPad, and notes that the 4.0 drops the 3.0's AirTag pocket. Outdoor Gear Lab scored it 72, eighth of 20, calling it "a winner with professionals or fashion-conscious users", with the sternum strap sold separately. If the standard size feels like too much bag, Wirecutter also recommends the 15-liter Apex Compact Backpack 4.0, which fits a 16-inch MacBook; it is a different product from the one linked here. Best Premium Build: EVERGOODS CIVIC Panel Loader 24L (CPL24) — Check price

GearJunkie's best commuter-style travel backpack (8.2 of 10): its tester carried it through a month of remote work, calls it "the final word in daily travel packs", and fit a 17-inch MacBook Pro through the side opening of its suspended, fully padded laptop compartment, though EVERGOODS itself sizes the CPL24 for laptops up to a 16-inch MacBook Pro. Pack Hacker scored the current V3, in solution-dyed 840D ballistic nylon 6, 8.6 of 10, finding the harness comfortable even when the pack was full. Outdoor Gear Lab hosed it down without "a drop" getting inside and scored its laptop protection 8.5, level with the Timbuk2; it ranked the pack ninth of 20, listing as drawbacks its price, stubborn zippers and a fit "a titch small for broader shoulders". It has no water-bottle pocket (Outdoor Gear Lab, Pack Hacker). EVERGOODS sells it direct, at $285 in Solution Dyed Black when we checked on 2026-10-15, with a lifetime warranty; the same page sells the 16-liter CPL16, which is Pack Hacker's best small laptop backpack and a different bag. Best for the Daily Commute: ALPAKA Bravo Backpack (23L) — Check price

Pack Hacker's best work laptop bag (8.2 of 10): a 23-liter pack in 400D Axoflux ripstop nylon with YKK AquaGuard zippers, a sleeve for up to a 16-inch MacBook Pro, a side security pocket and a luggage pass-through, and a harness the whole Pack Hacker team liked. Pack Hacker's reservations are tame organization for the space, no quick-grab pocket, a tendency to tip forward when set down, and a fabric that picks up fine dust. Tom's Guide's tester took it 500 miles, including London office commutes, found its 2.6 pounds easy to carry and its water-resistant fabric and zippers able to keep London rain out, and once squeezed a 17-inch gaming laptop into the sleeve. Pack Hacker's guide says the Aer City Pack Pro 2 has more organization and space, at a higher price. [src5, src9, src10]

Not Picked: Peak Design Everyday Backpack 30L (V2)

The testers carried the 30-liter V2. CNN Underscored made it its best customizable laptop backpack: the main chamber opens from the top or either side and has three sections, "a big deal for camera pros with multiple lenses", and its laptop protection is "among the sturdiest" of CNN's picks, though CNN found it probably too complex for some and expensive. Pack Hacker scored the 30L V2 8.4 of 10 and says its design works "for camera kits, EDC, and minimal travel—in that order", with a top that is not secure on the highest MagLatch. Outdoor Gear Lab scored it 70, rating its laptop protection 8.0, and lists it as expensive, heavy and stiff; at 4.3 lb on its scale it is the heaviest pack here. Outdoor Gear Lab and Pack Hacker list a 15-inch laptop sleeve, though CNN fit a 16-inch Alienware m16 R2 in the rear compartment. Peak Design now sells a "newly revamped" Everyday Backpack, the V3, in 20L and 30L sizes (when we checked on 2026-10-15), and we found no test of the V3, so this card names the 30L (V2) without a link and makes no camera-gear pick. Best Town-to-Trail Pack: Osprey Nebula 32 — Check price

CleverHiker's best commuter backpack (4.4 of 5), tested on Alaskan commutes and day trips: three compartments, a laptop pocket that unzips completely open and is one of the larger it tested, a stretch-mesh outer pocket and two water-bottle sleeves. It became CleverHiker's bag of choice for commuting, the gym and biking across town, but it found the back panel less breathable than pricier Osprey packs and the pack easily overburdened. Outdoor Gear Lab scored it 66, 15th of 20, rating its laptop protection 7.0, and groups it with The North Face Recon and Borealis as packs that can double as a hiking daypack, though they do not look as professional as some of the other bags it tested. Pack Hacker scored it 8.2 of 10: 1680 CORDURA ballistic nylon, an elevated padded sleeve for up to a 16-inch device, two side pockets and plenty of organization, though not every pocket can be used at once and the second laptop-compartment sleeve is unpadded. Its laptop-bag guide passed it over for the ALPAKA Bravo as having more bells and whistles than help in everyday use, at a higher price. It is listed, not picked, because Pack Hacker is the only outlet we read that tested it. Aer lists the 24L at $219, available in black when we checked on 2026-10-15. [src5, src14, src20]

Pack Hacker scored the Chasm Laptop Backpack 26L 7.9 of 10 for very thick laptop padding and a side zipper that reaches the laptop without disturbing the rest of the bag, against a hard-to-reach key leash and a space below the admin pocket that is hard to see into. Pack Hacker lists 26 liters, 2 lb, 21 x 11.8 x 8.3 inches and a 16-inch laptop compartment. Listed, not picked: Pack Hacker is the only outlet we read that tested it. [src15]

Alternative: Matein Travel Laptop Backpack 15.6" — Check price

Outdoor Gear Lab's best under $50 (61, 17th of 20): 28 liters, a 15.6-inch sleeve with a securing strap, a USB port, a hidden back pocket and a luggage pass-through, at 1.7 lb on its scale. Outdoor Gear Lab's guide calls it "reasonably durable, water-resistant, and scuff-proof", but notes zippers that are not very robust, a thin shell with little extra padding, and no sternum strap [src2]. Outdoor Gear Lab's full review is warier: "There were a few places where water made its way through" in its water test, it would not want to carry heavier loads in the pack for long stretches, and "We don't think its long-term durability is on par with the best models" [src22]. Wirecutter, which also tried it, found it "felt cheaply made" [src1]. Only one of the two outlets that tested it recommends it, so it is listed as an alternative, with caution, rather than as a budget pick. Our link is the listing Outdoor Gear Lab links from its review, the brown bag its photos show; that listing's title says 32L, where Outdoor Gear Lab lists 28 liters (when we checked on 2026-10-15). Key Market Trends (2026)

• Testers split on the premium packs. Outdoor Gear Lab ranks the Timbuk2 Authority Deluxe (76) above the Troubadour Apex 4.0 and EVERGOODS CPL24 (72 each); Pack Hacker scored the CPL24 8.6 and the Timbuk2 7.9 in separate reviews; GearJunkie picks the CPL24 among travel packs; and Wirecutter picks the Troubadour and the Timbuk2 for different jobs rather than naming one best. • New versions change the bag. The Troubadour Apex 4.0 is 22 liters against the 3.0's 25 and drops its AirTag pocket (Macworld), and Wirecutter liked it better for a more protective suspended laptop compartment and cushier straps. EVERGOODS's CPL24 V3 moved to a solution-dyed 840D ballistic nylon 6 and added padded mesh to the back panel and straps (Pack Hacker). • Suspended laptop compartments: which packs have them. Wirecutter counts a suspended compartment as more protective. The Troubadour Apex 4.0 (Wirecutter) and the EVERGOODS CPL24 (EVERGOODS, GearJunkie) suspend the laptop, and the Aer City Pack Pro 2 raises its padded sleeve (Pack Hacker); the Timbuk2 Authority Deluxe does not suspend it (Wirecutter). • Laptop-size ratings differ by source. Timbuk2, Wirecutter and Outdoor Gear Lab list the Authority Deluxe for 17-inch laptops; CNN Underscored lists 16 inches. EVERGOODS sizes the CPL24 for laptops up to a 16-inch MacBook Pro, while GearJunkie fit a 17-inch MacBook Pro. Outdoor Gear Lab and Pack Hacker list a 15-inch sleeve on the Peak Design Everyday 30L, while CNN Underscored fit a 16-inch Alienware m16 R2 in its rear compartment. • Pack Hacker's Timbuk2 numbers differ from Timbuk2's. Pack Hacker's spec box lists 28 liters, 630D nylon and a 15-inch laptop compartment for the bag it tested; Timbuk2's page now lists 100% recycled nylon and a 17-inch sleeve, and Wirecutter, CNN Underscored and Outdoor Gear Lab all list 20 liters.
