What are the best dog beds in 2026?

Summary

Five outlets have published hands-on dog-bed tests we could read. Reviewed put beds in front of co-workers' dogs (guide updated August 2025). Wirecutter tested 24 of the 39 beds it considered with two dogs of about 65 pounds, scraping every cover 50 times with a gardening claw and meat shredders, spot-cleaning fake vomit and mud, and washing each cover three times (December 2025). Business Insider tested more than 40 beds with dogs of all sizes and ages, plus fork, scissors, sandpaper and stain tests (February 2026), and 22 orthopedic beds with mostly senior dogs over several weeks (September 2026). NBC Select combined vets' recommendations with beds its editors' own dogs use (September 2026). Gun Dog tested Orvis's RecoveryZone beds with a setter and a 10-year-old Labrador (May 2024). Chewy tested 25 of the beds it sells; we quote its testers but do not count a retailer as an independent review. The PetFusion Ultimate Dog Bed is the top pick: Reviewed's best for large dogs and Business Insider's best orthopedic bed, which Business Insider tested in the large size with two 45-pound dogs. Wirecutter, which recommended it in the past, now finds its cover holds stains and its foam compresses under weight. The budget pick is the Frisco Faux Suede Bolster Bed, which small dogs in both Business Insider's and NBC Select's homes took to; it has no foam, so it is a comfort bed, not a support bed. For dogs of 50 pounds and up, the Big Barker has more foam than any other bed Wirecutter tested; it is an alternative here because neither Wirecutter nor Reviewed says which edition it tested. What the vets say: Cornell's Dr. Joe Wakshlag told NBC Select that "all memory foam somewhere in the 4 inches to 5 inches range is probably a good choice", and that "Anything that has 1 inch of memory foam is going to claim to be an orthopedic bed". A veterinarian told Wirecutter that "orthopedic" is "a misused word for dogs", and the vets Wirecutter interviewed advise a dog with arthritis to have a bed that is easy to get into and out of and does not create pressure points. On size, NBC Select's experts say a bed should let a dog lie "with their limbs fully extended". [src2, src3]

This revision changes most of the card. The previous top pick, the Orvis RecoveryZone ToughChew Couch, rested on Reviewed's best overall, but Reviewed tested a different shape, the ToughChew Den; the Couch stays as an alternative on Gun Dog's test. The Saatva Dog Bed, the previous value pick, and the HEST Dog Bed came from Sleep Foundation, which says it researched its picks, and no outlet we read tested either, so both are gone. The Bedsure Orthopedic Crate Pad, the previous budget pick, is gone too: no outlet we read tested it, and the card's old claim that Reviewed and NBC Select recommend Bedsure was wrong, as neither guide names a Bedsure bed. The K9 Ballistics Chew Proof Elevated Bed leaves because the Dogster guides the card cited for it did not load for us on 2026-10-15 and no outlet we read tested it. Top Pick: PetFusion Ultimate Dog Bed — Check price

Business Insider's best orthopedic dog bed in its main guide and its best overall in its orthopedic guide: "our pick for the best orthopedic dog bed and the most supportive we tested". It tested the large with a 45-pound Labradoodle and a 45-pound beagle, and "Both dogs rested comfortably on this bed and were evenly supported by the dense memory foam"; the cover stayed durable apart from some pilling, the waterproof liner did its job, and the drawbacks were fiddly bolster assembly and fur that clings to the cover. Reviewed's best for large dogs calls it "A couch-type bed that will rival your own when it comes to joint support and ideal lounging conditions", with an open front "providing easy access for short or senior dogs", a waterproof liner and a tear-resistant cotton and polyester twill cover; its one con is the price. Wirecutter, which once recommended it, disagrees: "its poly-cotton twill cover held on to stains, even after we washed it three times", and "The foam mattress felt great at first, but it fully compressed under our weight after just a few minutes." PetMD's veterinary panel also makes it its "Best in Show Orthopedic Dog Bed", without a test. Sizes are small, large, extra-large and jumbo, with no medium; the small has only 2 inches of foam, against 4 to 6 inches in the larger sizes. Business Insider's orthopedic guide, updated 2026-09-19, adds: "Our top pick is the Petfusion Ultimate Dog Lounge, which has unfortunately been discontinued. For now, you can still get it in limited sizes and colors." We link the Amazon listing Business Insider links for the large it tested; Amazon listed it as out of stock when we checked on 2026-10-15. Best Budget: Frisco Faux Suede Bolster Bed — Check price

Business Insider's best for small dogs: "Our two small dog testers were obsessed with the budget-friendly Frisco Faux Suede Bolster Bed, whining and begging for it anytime it was moved out of their area" — a 10-pound chihuahua mix and a 12-pound terrier. A fork raked across it did not puncture or tear it. The cover cannot be removed, but "the entire bed is machine washable and dryer-safe, and it looked nearly brand-new after laundering". NBC Select's best budget-friendly bed is the same faux-suede Frisco bolster, but its evidence is the author's own dog's use of it rather than a test: it is a favorite of Bella, the author's 15-pound havanese and bichon frise mix, and "Frisco's dog bed has larger bolsters than most dog beds Bella has tried." It comes in brown or khaki green and in small, medium and large. There is no foam inside, only polyester filling, so treat it as a comfort bed for small and medium dogs, not a support bed. Best Elevated Bed: K&H Original Pet Cot — Check price

"Our favorite elevated dog bed", says Business Insider: "a tightly woven nylon canvas platform that delivers sturdy support without sagging". It tested the medium, rated to 200 pounds, and put 137 pounds of its own weight on it to confirm its stability. The legs snap in without tools but "can shift out of alignment when you move the bed"; it hosed off and the platform went through the washing machine. Two cautions: "We were able to puncture it with dull scissors, so it may not hold up well for dogs that are rough on their gear", and the medium "sits 7 inches off the ground, which may not be suitable for very short dogs or pups with limited mobility". Wirecutter, which picked it in an earlier version of its guide and now lists it among the competition, says it "is still an excellent outdoor bed (or an indoor option for dogs that run hot or prefer to be off the floor for their snoozing)", but that a dog that wants something cozy or cushiony is better off with its current picks. Alternative: Big Barker Original Orthopedic Dog Bed, Headrest Edition — Check price

For dogs of 50 pounds or more that need deep foam. Wirecutter tested the Barker Beds Orthopedic Dog Bed and calls it "designed for large and giant-breed dogs", with "three layers of foam, totaling 7 inches overall—more than in any other bed we tested". It is "noticeably firmer than the other beds we tried, so it might be too stiff for lighter dogs"; the optional waterproof liner "was a pain to put on" but kept liquids out. Reviewed tested it too, listing "Ideal for older or impaired mobility dogs" among its pros and "Very expensive" as its con. Chewy's tester, Mary Schwager, used the Large Headrest Edition with her two Labrador Retrievers: "When my dogs sleep on it, they're several inches off the ground, and the bed doesn't pancake down"; she would have liked a bolster on both sides. Big Barker sells it in Sleek, Headrest and Sofa Editions, in Large (48 x 30 x 7 inches), Extra Large and Giant (60 x 48 x 7), made in the USA with CertiPUR-US foam, with a 10-year no-flatten warranty that excludes the cover and chewing damage. Neither Wirecutter nor Reviewed says which edition it tested, so the only test of the Headrest Edition we link is Chewy's, a retailer's; that is why it is an alternative here rather than a named pick. NBC Select's best memory foam bed. Cornell's Dr. Joe Wakshlag calls it "a safe pick for most dogs", and an NBC Select reporter's senior Labrador, Chance, uses the large; the small is for dogs up to 30 pounds, the medium up to 60 and the large up to 90, and the large is the listing we link. Reviewed tested it: "There's no question this is one cushy dog bed", with two layers of memory foam and bolsters on every side, but "the Casper is durable but not indestructible, so if you're looking for a mattress for an enthusiastic chewer, this might not be for you". Chewy's tests point the other way on chewing: its 1.5-year-old "super chewer" never tried to chew the cover, and orange soda poured on it did not reach the foam. Wirecutter dropped it: "the quality has been inconsistent, so the price is no longer justified. The two sample beds we tested each had a foam bolster that never fully expanded." Alternative: FurHaven Velvet Waves Perfect Comfort Sofa (memory foam) — Check price

One of Wirecutter's two top picks: its "soft, comfortable foam, easy-to-clean cover, and affordable price make it an excellent choice for most dogs". The low front makes it easy to get into; an orthopedic-foam base sits under a memory-foam layer, 4 inches deep in the jumbo and 3 in the smaller sizes; and the cover was one of the easiest to spot-clean that Wirecutter tested. Two cautions: "fluids, dirt, and fur passed through it and collected on the top layer of the foam mattress", so Wirecutter suggests FurHaven's water-resistant liner, and the foam can be spot-cleaned but not washed. It "has held up well" after more than two years of Wirecutter's long-term testing. Wirecutter tested the memory-foam version; FurHaven also sells the sofa with cooling-gel and orthopedic foam, which it did not test, so check the foam type on the listing before you buy. Alternative: Orvis RecoveryZone ToughChew Couch — Check price

For a dog that chews and also needs foam. Orvis builds it with a three-sided bolster of full-height foam, a 4-inch CertiPUR-US foam base under a 1-inch Serene Foam top, and a cover of upholstery bonded to ripstop nylon with the zipper and handles hidden; its ToughChew Guarantee reads: "If your dog chews through this cover, we'll refund your money, no questions asked." Gun Dog tested the RecoveryZone Couch, which it describes with the ToughChew cover, in 2024: it found the foam "tough, maybe too tough?", but "My 10-year-old Lab comfortably claimed the Couch bed—within minutes he was snoring, his head propped on the bolster without sagging." The Couch is an alternative, not a named pick, because Gun Dog's is the only test of it we read. [src10, src7]

For small dogs that curl up and burrow. NBC Select's best shag bed: a former editor's dog "has loved this cozy circular bed since the day he came home", and "I just throw it in the wash on the gentle cycle". Chewy's tester used the medium with a 20-pound and a 30-pound dog — "They especially loved to snuggle in it and bury their face" — and washed the whole bed in the machine. Business Insider preferred a Furhaven donut, finding the Best Friends bed "more expensive" with "softer, less structured bolsters", but says it "remains a strong alternative". Wirecutter marked it down: "the fill moved around so much that it left empty spots where we could feel the floor beneath", and the cover was a pain to spot-clean. We link the 23-inch small. Alternative: Kuranda Silver Aluminum Chewproof Dog Bed — Check price

For destructive dogs, indoors or out, when cushioning does not matter. Wirecutter: "a durable indoor/outdoor cot. It has tough fabrics and a thick aluminum frame—intended to stymie even the most determined chewers. Made in the USA, this cot is heavy, expensive, and requires a wrench and screwdriver to assemble." Kuranda guarantees the frame and three of its four fabrics against damage for a year, the Outdoor Mesh excepted. Wirecutter tested two fabrics: the Outdoor Mesh, "a great option for dogs who run hot", and the Heavy Duty Vinyl, easier to wipe clean but "stiffer and less comfortable". The fabric is chosen when you buy, and Wirecutter did not test the others, including the Cordura nylon of the listing we link. [src3]

Alternative: Coolaroo Elevated Pet Bed — Check price

For warm weather and the yard. Reviewed tested it: "great to have on hand during warmer months", raised for airflow and made from UV-treated material "that doesn't hold heat", and "a good choice for dogs with joint issues, since it releases pressure on the knees, hips, elbows, and shoulders". The "steel frame lined with sturdy polyethylene fabric" resists "mold, mildew, mites, and fleas". But "dogs that like to nest may straight up reject the bed", and unlike K&H's Bolster Cot it needs tools to assemble. Reviewed is the only outlet we read that tested it. [src1]

Key Market Trends (2026)

• The testers disagree on the best bed: Reviewed, Wirecutter, NBC Select and Business Insider each put a different bed first, and Wirecutter has dropped two beds other outlets still rank highly, the Casper and the PetFusion. [src1, src3, src2, src4]
• Orvis has trimmed its RecoveryZone range: the ToughChew Den, Reviewed's best overall, and the ToughChew Lounger, Wirecutter's upgrade pick, were not among the 14 beds on Orvis's dog-bed page when we checked on 2026-10-15; the RecoveryZone ToughChew Couch is. Wirecutter tested the ToughChew Lounger and the RecoveryZone Couch in standard fabric, not the ToughChew Couch, and found the RecoveryZone beds "the most comfortable dog beds I tried". Important Caveats

• Each size is its own product. Foam depth changes with size — 2 inches in the PetFusion's small against 4 to 6 in its larger sizes, 3 inches in the FurHaven sofa's smaller sizes against 4 in the jumbo — so check the size before you buy.
