Babylist notes that most parents start with an infant seat and then move to a convertible [src1], and Wirecutter notes that both NHTSA and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend keeping children rear-facing as long as possible, until they reach their seat's height or weight limit [src8]. Wirecutter's top pick: it rear-faces from 4 to 50 lbs, its extension panel "pulls out to provide 5 inches of extra legroom in rear-facing mode", its LATCH installation works to 45 lbs ("the highest LATCH weight limit of any of the seats we tested"), and it weighs 19 lbs at 19.5 inches wide; Wirecutter also calls it "a great value". The flaws it lists are no seat-belt lock-off, a cover that must come off to move the LATCH strap, padding less cushiony than on pricier seats, and rough, stain-prone fabric [src8]. Mommyhood101 rates it 10 of 10 and could fit kids up to nearly 3 years old rear-facing; the extended panel makes the seat stick out from the vehicle seat back [src5]. It rotates toward the door in both rear- and forward-facing mode and needs only one installation; its tester called installation "by far the easiest", and the costs are 33.8 lbs and a LATCH rear-facing limit of 30 lbs [src4]. Consumer Reports gives it an Overall Score of 84, the highest among its 18 recommended harnessed car seats [src3], and says it "performed very well" in its crash test protocol [src18]. BabyGearLab finds it "one of the easiest to install, no matter which method you choose", but gives it slightly below-average crash test analysis results (7.1 of 10) and measured it at 32.3 inches long and 32.4 lbs [src2]. Wirecutter's runner-up (with the Britax Poplar) for anyone whose top priority is installation: it found the Poplar seats need less effort to install than any other seat it tested, because the ClickTight mechanism removes the slack from the seat belt; the Poplar S adds an anti-rebound bar. It is 17 inches wide, rear-faces from 5 to 50 lbs and weighs 29.1 lbs with the bar, but in Wirecutter's experience it does not give much legroom rear-facing [src8]. The Bump's best slim convertible for three across; its tester found it cramped for her 3-year-old rear-facing [src4]. Strolleria, a baby-gear retailer, names it its best convertible for compact cars [src7]. BabyGearLab scores it 76 but finds its crash test analysis average [src2]. BabyGearLab's favorite seat for most families: 8.7 of 10 for crash test analysis, one of the lowest chest-clip G-forces it recorded, and 21.8 lbs and 25.3 inches front to back as it measured; it is not narrow, at 19.3 inches at its widest by BabyGearLab's measure and 20 inches in The Bump's listing [src2, src4]. The Bump names it the best all-in-one for a newborn: a 4-lb minimum, a low 6-inch bottom harness setting, a relatively compact rear-facing recline and a booster to 120 lbs; its tester found forward-facing LATCH less intuitive [src4]. Wirecutter preferred the Extend2Fit 3-in-1, which it finds better for extended rear-facing [src8]. Consumer Reports recommends it with an Overall Score of 72 [src3]. The Bump's best extended rear-facing all-in-one lists it at 19.5 inches wide and 30 lbs; its tester installed it with the seat belt in under five minutes and found it comfortable rear-facing for a 3.5-year-old; it uses hook-style LATCH connectors [src4]. Babylist calls it "the best convertible car seat for families looking for a premium seat that’s easy to install, supports extended rear-facing and fits kids well through multiple stages": rear-facing from 5 to 50 lbs, forward-facing from 30 to 65 lbs and a high-back booster from 40 to 110 lbs; it is expensive, wide with the cup holders on, and does not fit tiny newborns well [src1]. BabyGearLab scores it 81 and gives it its luxury award, but says the Nuna RAVA next "offers slightly better crash analysis results and similar functionality" for less, and that it "would not recommend it to a friend due to that very high price" [src2].
